I’m making steady progress on the image for the “Touch of Destiny” cover. I’ve reproduced the lyrics below the image you can see the kind of themes and images I was aiming for.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

Touch of Destiny (lyrics)

VERSE 1

Adrift in Kyoto nights

Between conveyer lives

Her finger pressed send

The extra puzzle piece

To the future planned out east

Like cookie cutters

CHORUS

In the summer she drifted to me

Like a reed in a stream finds an eddie

Now she’s nothing but faint memories

Of a future that wasn’t to be

And I’m searching for strange families

In the cafes and lantern-lit alleys

Under skies of a dead channel grey

Fragile memories are fated to fade

CHORUS 2

Just one day in every 10 years

She steps off a ship of her fears

Let the souls of the dead drift away,

Til the sun burns the remnants of day

Cos I’m searching for strange families

In the clubs and the cable-strewn alleys

Under skies of a dead channel grey

Fragile memories are fated to fade

VERSE 2

Tattooed behind the ear

To mark the day the fear

And trauma marked her

Now she can’t meet my eyes

An open circuit dies

If you can’t close it

Chorus 3

In the summer she drifted to me

Like a touch of destiny

Like a past life was starting to bleed

Into this future reality

And I’m searching for community

In the cafes and lantern-lit alleys

Under skies of a dead channel grey

Fragile memories are fated to fade

Here’s a composite of a beach I liked, with a dramatic sky.

I added some lighting and shadow effects and altered the color of the background to create the feel I was looking for.

I then took a photo of a model in a shawl and painted in to the image to give the folds of the gown a Michelangelo Buonarroti quality.

I then added the figure to the beach background and worked some more on the lighting and shadows to make the figure sit in his environment and to give the image the emotion I was looking for.

A photo from Kiyomachi Dori in Kyoto last night. The most moving part of the walk was being told by a small boy to look up into the trees, through the petals to a white bird that was sitting in a branch. Once I noticed one I realised there were dozens of these white birds, hidden and perfectly camouflaged among the white-pink sakura petals in full bloom. My jaw dropped when I realised how many of the little animals I had utterly failed to notice. The boy saw the stunned look on my face and smiled as if his work was done. He’d opened another adult’s eyes to the world around him he was failing to see. I thanked him and he moved off with parents. It’s amazing what you can learn from kids. They’re a constant inspiration.
