After working on the photograph for a few days, I turned my and attention to the other design elements such as a wooden tabletop look, an old parchment look, a piratical font and a gold chain in the shape of 1.G.K. I did a lot of work on the lighting for this composition and although I’m still at an early stage, a lot of work and layers have gone into it so far. I haven’t decided on the final layout, but I thought it might be interesting to see some of the iterations I go through while I work.

A photo from Kiyomachi Dori in Kyoto last night. The most moving part of the walk was being told by a small boy to look up into the trees, through the petals to a white bird that was sitting in a branch. Once I noticed one I realised there were dozens of these white birds, hidden and perfectly camouflaged among the white-pink sakura petals in full bloom. My jaw dropped when I realised how many of the little animals I had utterly failed to notice. The boy saw the stunned look on my face and smiled as if his work was done. He’d opened another adult’s eyes to the world around him he was failing to see. I thanked him and he moved off with parents. It’s amazing what you can learn from kids.
