Levelling Up on Flickr.
I love backlighting.
Today I went to a Robert Doisneau exhibition and saw in living glory the photo that made me want to become a photographer, “M.Barre’s Carousel”.
Seeing the detail and beauty of the full size print for the first time, with the pristine, backlit raindrops frozen in time above that forlorn carousel reminded me how much has changed since I first saw that image all those years ago. My life changed fundamentally on that day and has spun off in fantastically unexpected directions ever since.
Today, I feel like I’ve come full circle in some way and it was quite a profound experience to look upon the start of the journey with different eyes, a few wrinkles worse for wear and a million experiences richer.
Unfortunately, I got something in my eye as I was basking in that shimmering glory if the image that made it look, to the layperson, as if I was crying. Which I wasn’t. Even if it looked like it.
Anyway, as Japan approaches Saint Valentine’s day, a toast to backlighting. Romance would be the poorer without it.
