While I was living in Japan I was lucky enough to become a singer/songwriter for a band called 1.G.K. Today I found out that the band is breaking up. 1.G.K was possibly the first time in my life I was able to apply my creative energies to a project that I was really proud of. We sounded like the kind of band I’d want to listen to and that’s surprisingly rare. I’ve been making art of one kind or another for as long as I can remember and the things I’ve made have almost never had the beauty and grace I wanted them to. But with 1.G.K we came really close. I think we wrote some pretty special songs and played some truly memorable gigs. Some of my happiest memories come from my time with those five guys. I’m sad to hear that after 10 years of work, during which the band went from strength to strength, the guys have decided to call it a day. I hope one day their achievements will be marked by a kid in bedroom who stumbles across their tunes on YouTube. I hope that kid wonders why he’s never heard of this band and plays their songs loud on his best days. I wish Katsu, Jodie, Shohei, Hiroki and Kyohei all the best for the future. I believe Katsu to be one of the only true geniuses I’ve ever met and if there’s any justice in the world, he will come to the attention of the public and be remembered for all time as just that. Good luck guys. 1.G.K was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I miss you.
